Careers Profile: Social Media Manager
Although originally designed as a way to interact with family and friends, social media has evolved into something that goes beyond family interactions. In today’s competitive world, any large business without a social media presence (whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or a combination of these) is two steps behind the rest. This is where a social media manager comes in.
It’s interesting how a couple of years back, the role of a social media manager did not even exist. Today, however, almost every company is involved in social media one way or another.
My role as a social media manager is to create and/or implement a business social media strategy in order to boost its visibility. This usually done by managing a business's online presence, developing a strategy, producing good content, analyzing usage data, facilitating customer service and managing projects and campaigns.
My responsibilities as a social media manager are :
Developing a social media strategy and set goals to increase a business brand awareness and engagement.
Manage all social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.
Develop and manage competitions and campaigns that promote a business and their brand.
Write engaging blog posts and articles.
Create engaging multimedia content such as videos, and/or outsource this effectively.
Form key relationships with influencers across the social media platforms.
Manage and facilitate social media communities by responding to social media posts and developing discussions.
Monitor and report on performance on social media platforms using tools such as Google Analytics.
A TYPICAL DAY FOR A SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER
A work day for me includes much more than simply posting tweets and Facebook updates. I actually don’t have a rigid daily schedule to follow, due to the fact that I work from home mostly, attend events, or take photographs. My work environment is usually exciting and constantly changing based on where I am.
When the alarm goes off in the morning the first thing I usually do is reach straight for my cell phone to see how much attention posts have attracted overnight.
Here’s a quick look at my day and how I spend each third of my day:
8-9:00am: Drink Tea or coffee
9:30-10:00 am: Check Email
10:30-11 am: Check-in on all social media platforms
11:30-12 am: Respond and engage with community
12-12:30 am: Schedule new content to Buffer
12:30-1:00 pm: Lunch
1-1:30 pm: Respond and engage with community
1:30-2:00 pm: Curate content
2-2:30pm: Read and learn
2:45-3pm: Schedule content
3-4:30pm: Content creation (video, graphics)
4:30-5 pm: Emails
6:45-8 pm: Dinner
8-9 pm: Learn (Reading a book)
9-10 pm: Relax and watch TV
10-10:30 pm: Read
10:30 pm: Sleep and repeat!
This is one of the best jobs out there. What’s better than engaging with awesome people on social media, managing and creating content that people love?
The big challenge is that as a full-time social media manager I can take on a huge number of tasks every single day, and that usually means working late at night. That’s why it’s important that I constantly work on prioritizing tasks.
