Embracing a Healthy Lifestyle by Eating Clean


So, recently we were presented with a crazy scary pandemic named Listeriosis.

This is a form of disease that is caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Listeriosis has become an important public health problem in South Africa. The disease affects primarily pregnant women, newborns, and anyone who is immunocompromised.

Some of the symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. Whereas infection during pregnancy may lead to stillbirth, premature delivery, and infection of the newborn.


Now we’ve been told that to prevent the infection we should thoroughly cooked, raw food from animal sources (such as beef, pork, or poultry) and uncooked meats should be kept separate from vegetables, cooked foods, and ready-to-eat foods. Raw vegetables should be washed thoroughly before being eaten, and raw (unpasteurized) milk or foods made from raw milk should be avoided

This has in a way shown us as South Africans the importance of hygiene within our homes, washing the food we ingest and making sure that our meals are thoroughly cooked! Now Listeriosis is no death sentence, but it may be a threat to your health. It’s vital you learn to start eating healthy and  making sure you and your loved ones are partaking of clean products.


I’m reminded by what my mum used to say to me growing up “Wash your hands!” How important is that advice today?... Life will always presents us with many harmful diseases which we mostly have no control over their development, however, I believe it’s going back to the basic and being picky with what we put into our bodies that will help us stay healthy. So, as we try to fight this pandemic as a country, I would suggest that you learn to only ingest only the best when it comes to your food intake, pride yourself in taking time and effort in what you eat.
